Hello all! First off want to say, great forum! I have been trolling the CRNA section allnurses.com forums and was glad to find this one, as it is much more specialized, concentrated, and accurate info on CRNA stuff.
I guess my main question is, what are my chances of getting in? I have been stressing out for a year now worrying that I won't be accepted anywhere...
Currently I am an RN (ADN) student who is scheduled to graduate Jan. 09 and currently applying for ICU jobs. My school is an "accelerated program" - our classes are 5 weeks long with the total program length 15 months. The classes are way tougher than I thought they would be - nothing is "diluted" for the sake of the 5 week course. We have at least a 1 quiz and a 1-2 tests each week with 12 hour clinical days in between. I worked my butt off but a few B's still managed to slip in. It's pretty much impossible to make A's in a lot of the nursing classes. Not trying to sound cocky, but I am one of the top 2 students in my class, with my wife being the top. She pretty much has the same background as me, and we are both trying to become CRNAs. So I guess my original question would be what are OUR chances are of getting in?
I also have 2 BS degrees in computer and electrical engineering from a big college and the wife has a BS in industrial engineering. I know our choices of CRNA schools are limited from the BS, and I've already contacted several of them to find out if BS's in engineering would be acceptable. Some programs accept it, most don't. We plan on getting about 2-3 years of experience prior to applying. If you're wondering why didn't do an accelerated BSN its because we would have had to wait another year to do a bunch of prereqs as our BSs aren't life sciences.
Here are our stats:
Me | Her
ADN: 3.61 | 3.78
BS: 3.39 | 3.09
Cumulative: 3.47 | 3.30
Science: (Does this count Pharm (nursing based)? Nutrition? Psych? how bout physics?) 3.66-3.95 | 3.80-3.84
Nursing: (Does pharm count here?) 3.40 | 3.58
Last 60 hours (all ADN stuff): 3.58 | 3.77
GRE: Have not taken yet
I know a lot of people will say that engineering to nursing is a huge jump, but we know it will be worth it and are happy to have taken the first step. We just found engineering so boring, insecure, and unfulfilling, although money was good. We sacrificed pretty much everything we had to come to the nursing field.
Other questions:
Is it possible for both of us to successfully attend CRNA school at the same time (granted we get in and are stable financially)?
How many schools should you apply to??? We were planning on about 3-5 schools, but a friend in medschool says we need to apply to more...
Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance!
