Talking Any moms of 3 kids starting CRNA at 40? Would love to talk!

Hey...wish I had done it years ago...but all of the sudden I decide to go back for my BSN and go for my CRNA. Nervous about how I am going to do it while meeting demands of kids (ages 10,8,8--yes, twins), etc. Needing to quit work, I am part time right now...hubby nervous as well. Would love to hear how others are doing it, etc.:hmmmm2:

I have three kids also and a nervous hubby. Mine are 11, 9, and 7. I am getting my stuff together to apply for fall 2009. I work full time so it will be a major blow to our income. It is very scary. Half of the time I think I am crazy. I worry more about the kids than anything. I can commute to the school I am applying for (1 hr. away) and my clinicals will hopefully be at the hospital I am employed at. I took 2 classes this summer to help boost my undergrad GPA. It has been o'kay doing that. I took the MAT this morning. The main thing is I am worried about missing out on the kids and them missing me but I think this will be a good thing in the long run. I really want to do it and think I would be good at it. By the way, I am not far from 40. (37). It has been a long time since college.

Hey...nice to hear from you....I sometimes think I am nuts too!! Have done nothing school related in about 19 yrs!! The school I want to apply to is only 20-25 min away...I am glad of that. Central Florida actually has 2 school options in the area. The next closest is in Tampa--1.5 hrs. Yeah, it will be tough...my kids hate it now when I tell them I have to study for something, but 27 months will go by fast and like you said, will be a good thing when it's done.

    I say go for it!

There is one lady in my class in her 40's that is doing well. She has 3 little ones all under 10 yrs.

My housemate has 2 children, 2 and 5 and goes home every thur-sund. The hard part he says is studying at home. His wife wants him to do chores and take care of the kids on the weekends.

School is very time consuming and one thing to manage is your time. If you can get a family member to help out with the kids I here that does wonders. Some of my other classmates with kids have their in laws lend a hand.

    GL in you endeavors. :beerglass:

When are you going to apply? Have you finished your BSN yet? What does your husband think about all of it? Is he willing to pick up the kids, help with homework, do laundry, etc.? Mine "says" he will do it and he does do some now when I work. But I really don't think he understands how much I will be unavailable.

I'm still shy of 40 but I am a mom of 3 and I start in a few short weeks. There are times that I worry about missing out on important things- my baby is starting kindergarten soon. I just have to remind myself that I am doing this for them as well as me and use it as motivation to work even harder. My husband is supportive and is looking forward to taking over the household so I guess all that's left is for me to get it done.
    Good luck!

I see where you listed UAB as your school. That is where I will be applying for next fall. If you don't mind me asking, what where your stats for getting in? I am just trying to gauge my chances. How was the interview process?

    Hi!

Im not a mom,but a dad starting this Fall, we have 3 lil ones 8-6-5 Month old. Wow :eek2: , it is stressful, just getting things ready, but my in-laws are moving with us to Cali. Im excited and terrified at the same time. Im just glad that the school is very supportive. There is even a meeting that my wife and I have to attend when school starts. But we think this is the best for all of us in the end. But good luck.

What great responses from everyone...it feels very supportive....we all need it.
To "tomsgirl"--I am still working on my BSN---I would like to apply to enter 2010 or 2011--so I am still a little ways off, but not so far that it is not already requiring some preparation. Havn't enough stats yet to report except several years of ICU experience--about 17. My husband says he's supportive but he is leary...he keeps saying stuff like, "well when you get your BSN, there are opportunities you can take...."...I think he thinks I am on a whim with the CRNA thing. I understand his concern---it will be a big load for him as well. But, I believe he is coming around.
I live in Central Florida-we have 2 local school options here. Barry University has an extended campus here in Orlando and Florida Hospital, last year, just opened up a CRNA program at their college. I will probably apply to FH...I have worked there for past 20 yrs and it is close to my house. I don't know how UAB showed up in my profile...but I know it is a great school....

    Laurie
