Recently I spoke with an experienced CRNA who holds a high level office with the AANA. That CRNA was unaware we could write orders for hospital nursing staff to carry out due to lack of prescriptive authority. I explained that writing orders for hospital nursing staff was considered part of our scope of practice and not considered to be prescribing thus prescriptive authority was not required.

It is my understanding that prescriptive authority is only needed when writing an order for a pharmacy to fill and a patient to take outside of a hospital facility. So, who needs prescriptive authority? Do some states require prescriptive authority to write orders for nursing staff to administer? Is it simply regulated by hospital bylaws on an individual basis?

Sadly, like other issues related to independent CRNA practice, many are unaware of all we can do.
