Alabama Makes Propofol A Controlled Substance


Alabama has become the first state to classify the anesthetic propofol as a controlled substance. Propofol, the same drug which caused the death of Michael Jackson will become a Schedule IV drug in Alabama beginning August 27.
It has been nearly 2 years since the Drug Enforcement Agency published a proposed Rule to reclassify propofol as a Schedule IV substance under the Federal Drug Enforcement Act. However the DEA has since failed to act.

The State Committee of Public Health has approved the scheduling of the anesthetic propofol to Schedule IV of the Alabama Controlled Substances List.
