NY Jury Awards $120 M In Medical Malpractice Case
In what is described as one of the largest verdicts in state history, a Bronx, NY jury has awarded a 45 year old woman $120 million dollars in a medical malpractice claim brought on her behalf by her mother.* Jacqueline Martin suffered severe brain damage during her course of treatment from 3 area hospitals.
Martin had a seizure disorder and in the lawsuit claimed that the hospital and her treatment providers failed to manage her medications and respond appropriately to severe complications that arose, causing her brain injury. The jury agreed and found that Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx was 50 percent liable for Martin’s disability, and that Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn was 40 percent liable.*A third hospital, Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, was held to be 5 percent liable, while one of its neurologists was held 4 percent liable.
