Today while in clinic I was "pimped" the question of how does Pitocin cause hypotension if it pushed IV or given too rapidly?? And why is it difficult to treat?? I immediately did not know the answer, but after looking up some stuff I can only find that it can cause renal, coronary and cerebral vasodilation. These all I know can cause hypotension, but doesn't really explain why this drug induced hypotension is also sometimes refractory to vasopressors. Any answers or direction to look for the answer out there?
