Morning everybody! A quick question regarding taking courses at UNE online.

My science background involves taking an introductory course to general chemistry at a community college prior to entering nursing school. I didn't do so hot in Peds during school and repeated it and came out with a C. Trying to do whatever I can now to show that I've grown up a bit.

My question is: Would taking organic via UNE Online be a disaster for me? It's been five years since taking a chemistry course. Would I be better off to maybe start with the General Medical Chemistry I/II and then do biochem?

I'm no where near ready to apply for school. I have one year of Trauma ICU in a level one facility and am now working in a Surgical ICU at a different academic facility. I have CCRN. I'm looking to prepare for GRE as well as possibly take some science courses (since my undergrad didn't require anything other than A&P).

Any comments, concerns, criticisms, or comments? :beerglass: :beerglass:

Lots of people more qualified than me to answer but here goes: Much of your question depends on the schools you intend to apply to and what their requirements are. Many schools just require a general chemistry but some do require organic. Speaking from my own experience organic was tough in class so on-line might be frustrating.

If you are wanting to take some science classes to bulk up your GPA or enhance your application I say go for it but be careful. However, I say again that it may be unnecessary and you need to look at the schools requirements you are interested in applying to. A "C" in one class is not a killer. What is your GPA? Sounds like you are getting some good critical care experience which is a plus.

I really don't have a good answer for you, except to consider why these high level science course are required or encouraged. In anesthesia school you will be taking graduate level chemistry, physiology, biochemistry, etc. If you have a strong foundation, the courses in school will be easier for you and you can spend more time focusing on their practical application to clinical anesthesia.

i would also recommend some math and statistics courses.

I'd work on the GREs first, they are good for 5 years and if you are unable to score well on them (atleast break a 1K) many school are not going to take you anyways.
High levels science classes won't help you there, it's high school algebra and geometry. Buy a review book and start doing problems. If you aren't doing well, take a review class. Then worry about filling in science classes. Organic, IMHO, is hard as all hell - few non-chem majors are going to get much better than C.

Without seeing your transcript, I suggest three classes to help polish your app and prepare you for a NA program.

Stats, Patho & Biochem

I've taken UNE's Biochem. I don't think General Chem is a necessary prereq. The concepts are not terribly difficult, but there is a lot to remember. Getting an A in this class is time consuming. I took it without having been in a chem class since high school.
