I start clinicals in a few weeks and I have gotten a book list from other students and the school.
I have looked on this site for reviews of these books and they all reviewed well. My questions is do I need to buy all of them or could I get by with just some of them (the loan money is running out). If they are all great and benificial then fine I will buy them all.
Thanks
Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures Jaffe
Handbook of Anesthesiology Ezekial
Nurse Anesthesia pocket guide Macksey
Mass Genn Anesthesia Handbook

Jaffe is just about a must have. There is information in there that you can't get in any other text. If you haven't looked at one, it has most of the procedures done; synopsis of the patho; synopsis of the surgery; anesthesia considerations and how he thinks they should be done and are usually done, to a degree. It is too big to be taking to the OR, but when you start clinical it will be invaluable to read the night before. I would pick either the Ezekiel or the MGH to take to the OR....leave it at that. Looking back, I wish I hadn't bought as many books as I did.

Maksey was one book I didn't find helpful. Some people would say Ezekial OR Mass General. Jaffe is must have. If I had to choose, I'd go with Jaffe and Mass General. However, there is a pediatric pocket reference written by our own LouCRNA which is a MUST HAVE for peds cases. Everybody also takes M & M with them. Not pocket size, but good to have in backpack.

Thanks for the replies. That really helps me make my decision. I also tend to buy too many books and I still have 4 that are still in the wrappers from my first semester. What a waste of money. One more thing I forgot to ask about is a drug guide. I have seen a few on this site that come highly recommended but do you guys have a preference?? I just want to be prepared although I am sure I will still stand at the head of the bead with huge eyes and have to remind myself to breath....for me and the patient!!

When I was in school I bought too many of the pocket references. I used to lug about 6 "handbooks" on varying subspecialities with me to clinical every day when I was in school. I rarely ever used them except to study when I was waiting for room turn around at some of the slower hospitals.
You can get by with just:
Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures by Jaffe
Handbook of Anesthesiology by Ezekial
As far as a drug guides, your pharmacology book from class will suffice, however if you want something to carry with you to clinical the best one by far in my opinion is
Lexi-Comp's Anesthesiology & Critical Care Drug Handbook
Just my $0.02

I agree with Lexi-Comp and the nice thing about it is the specific anesthetic considerations that are listed for some drugs. I found that helpful.

my Ezekial is falling apart (after barely being used), cheap binding. mass general's still going strong, but my pda gets used the most.

In clinical I carried the Oxford Handbook of Anesthesia and Ezekial (which I got spiral bound at Kinkos for $6.00).
I used to carry the mini Co-Existing disease book when I first started. That ended up staying at home with my Lexicomp book and used for those night before careplans.
Good Luck!
