View Full Version : Staff Ratio Politics and Question

Hey folks, I'd like some advice.

I am of course starting school this next spring, but in the mean time I've been helping with a group lobbying congress to get some legislation passed regarding nursing staff ratios. Basically the same stuff that was done in California. Of course, this will make the powers that be in hospital administration bitter, and possibly hostile towards me. Is this a bad idea to do before starting school? As of right now, they don't know I am involved, but may after another month or so. What do you think?

Oh, and I am going to school out of state. The reason I'm doing the lobbying is that nurses in my state are pretty much voiceless. Conversely, since I am moving into a field with a strong voice, I feel like it would be good to start the ball rolling for the people who have allowed me to pursue my anesthetist goals.

I'm curious to here what you say, if anyone cares.

thanks,

Capt.

hmm

States are very isolated from each other. I would think that it will have no effect on you since you will be doing your clinicals in a whole other state. How would they know what you did at home?

Are you planning to return to the same city/hospital when you complete your program?

If not, no worries.

Even if you are returning, the nursing and anesthesia departments in most hospitals are so segregated, I would be suprised if anyone who could influence your work life would remember your political activities from 2 1/2 years earlier.

My 2 cents worth.

yea, i feel like I'm playing with house money...i got to speak to a couple of senators at the capital and they were pretty cool...

my overall goal is to bring safer care for the patients and better work environments for the RN's, but my personal goal is to work this into a chance to get into a shouting match with Bill O'reilly....

thanks for your thoughts

Go for it!
I hope when you are done with Anesthesia school, you will get involved with the AANAs battles in Washington or at least at the state level. We need people who are willing to take on the political battles to help preserve our professional freedoms. All CRNAs should be involved in some way, but it takes special people to actually take on the politicians and the ASA.

well this is putting my cart way before the horse, but I will proudly do whatever's ask....luckily, the foundation of a powerful lobby is already in existence
