I start school in August and I have been thinking about recording lecture. I have some questions about doing so. I am strongly considering getting a Macbook (the cheapest one). Is there anyone here who currently records lecture, and if so how exactly do you do it. I would like details of the process of doing it. I would like to load the audio onto a computer and then onto an Ipod. What would be the easiest way of doing this, and what equipment/programs would I need?
By the way, do students with laptops generally sit at lecture and type notes directly onto the computer, and how well is this recieved by the professors? I had great success in college with just a pen and paper so I don't want to overcomplicate things. However something can be said for finding a new way to improve/supplement studying and making it fun.

I found that taping some things (neuroscience, physiology type courses) helped me a lot. It's time consuming to listen to them, but with difficult concepts it helped me. Other courses like Anesthesia Principles and Techniques it was a waste of time. I have a Macbook too. Be sure and buy an Olympus recorder. It's the only one compatible with Mac. We had 1 person that took notes on their computer, everyone else just used recorders and took notes. Good luck!

for a few classes (one's that i needed to spend a bit more time with) i recorded the lecture. after that, i just used it like an ipod. no need to put it to computer then convert it then put it on ipod. useless/time-consuming work that can be avoided by using the recorder as an "ipod".

I dont record anything. It simply isnt worth the time to listen to it. Spend your time reviewing the ENTIRE topic in context in M&M. That is where the 'money' is.

I would ask the professor permission before you record. Some tend to get very angry if students record without asking for permission. When I did group study back in undergrad, I found the recording to be too filled with too much background noise and in general hard to decipher.
What worked for me and What I will do again is take notes by pen and paper, if I have trouble goto the textbook and try to figure it out, if that doens't help goto another textbook. If I still have problems I will ask a fellow student or goto the professor.

Because I have a cassette deck in my car with a 45 min commute, I like to record the heavy lectures and listen to them on the drive. Problem is finding a better recorder. The one I have sucks. DOes anyone know of a decent casette recorder or is a digital recorder loud enough to play in heavy traffic?

most (if not all) digital recorders have a spot for ear phones. you can just put one ear piece in (usually right side if driving) and listen away, while still hearing your surroundings. and this is legal btw. however, both ears at the same time is illegal. at least it is in my state.

Yeap! I know... but... not allowed. In one of my courses we were not allowed to bring our own laptops for lectures.

I bought an adapter that plugged into my lighter and would tune the recorder into the FM radio on an un-used frequency. It worked perfect and helped with my 3 hour round trip commute. I was just losing too much time dodging 18- wheelers.

Damn clickety-clack, click, click, click, clickety, click-click... Wanted to bust the laptop over their head. :aargh4:
