Hello everyone, i've been going back and forth on this for about two years now... and have finally decided to go become a nurse and become a nurse anesthetist.... only problem is i'm doing it in three steps (money issues) Getting my RN then my BSN then my MSN sooo i have a question.... has anyone dealt with SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn NY? They have both RN to BSN and CRNA program.... i'd rather stay at a school that i can do smooth transitions. I also don't see the point to spending insane amounts of money that columbia and other programs require... does the name give you that much of an advantage? Please help!!! Do you think i'm doing the right thing?!?!

I don't think where you get your degree means too much in the CRNA world (I'm not familiar with the east coast). The type of clinical experience may matter for your first job, and then the type of work experience, (ie regional anesthesia, insertion of invasive monitoring, trauma cases, OB etc) may matter when you look for your next job. Often employers are willing to train people in techniques lacking if they are really looking for help, just depends. Personally I don't think paying a lot of extra tuition money is worth it.

Thanks alot for the advice. I'd like to stay on the east coast, but that is ideal. I'd be willing to travel anywhere for school. I got things settled, but can anybody tell me an accredited online program? I had a site but i must have misplaced it becuase i can't find it anymore.

Hey. I go to UMDNJ at this point, and they may be getting some NY clinical sites almost positive. I go to school with about 10 NYC residents.

I heard not so good things about SUNY downstate's program. The CRNA Chief in my hospital let go 3 new grads after hire from thier program d/t their performance. I also heard their program is up for review and they might not get accredited again. Rumors I don't know but sounds shady none the less. Just some things I hear in my hospital.

I have heard that the program was not taking any more new students d/t current students not passing their boards this year. Not too sure, but it does have a hint of truth since I know some one personally telling me that they received their application fee back, stating that they were not taking any more students. Also, some one who graduated from their program told me not to apply. Hope this helps.

A friend that applied received a refund for their application fee, the program is on hold for now, from what I understand.

Yeap, from personal experience, and only if they are still open (which I highly doubt) you DO NOT want to go to SUNY Downstate... plus they are not accepting any applicants any longer (from what I heard). I am at UMDNJ program and as one of my classmates here, Jon, had mentioned, I am one of the students currently attending one of our NY sites for clinical. I LOVE IT!!!
Good luck to you!

Yes it is accepting applications once again. They have tightened up their admission criteria,. so just make sure you review it before you apply.
