Judge Moves Trial Of Winkler Sheriff To Midland
Judge Robert H. Moore has ruled in favor of a prosecution motion to move the felony trial of longtime Winkler County Sheriff Robert Roberts, accused of retaliating against two whistle-blowing nurses (http://lawmedconsultant.com/winkler-county-page).
The trial is now set to begin on June 6 in Midland, in a nearby county about 65 miles west of Kermit
Winkler County district clerk Sherry Terry said Thursday that judge agreed to move the trial because of local influences favoring Roberts.
Roberts faces felony charges including misuse of information and retaliation stemming from the prosecution of two nurses who fired from a hospital in 2009.
The nurses were prosecuted after complaining anonymously to state regulators about Dr. Rolando Arafiles.
Arafiles and another county official also face charges (http://lawmedconsultant.com/1470/winkler-county-officials-indicted-as-we-predicted).
Roberts, who joined the Winkler County Sheriff’s office in 1986, was elected sheriff in 1992.
