For all of you who are aspiring to become CRNAs or are current SRNA please have all of your family members act upon this. It may be in texas but it is relative to all CRNA everywhere in the USA. Anyone can fill out this form you dont have to live in TX!

Attention all Texas Patients, CRNAs, SRNAs and Nurses: We need your help. After reading PLEASE CUT/PASTE AND REPOST THIS BULLETIN.

If there was ever a time to stand up for your profession and safety now is that time. I am writing this letter urging each and every one of you to contact your Texas State Representative or Texas State Senator and ask them to vote no or not support Texas SB 1314 and Texas HB 3313. These bills are bad public policy.

Basically the bills want to create a licensure board for Anesthesiologist Assistants (AA). Please tell me why AAs need to be licensed in Texas when fewer than 20 work here. This bill would allocate vast resources and time to license very few anesthesia practitioners at a time that the Texas Medical Board (TMB) has a back log of over 2,5000 direly needed physicians to be licensed because the TMB does not have adequate staff.
The problem is so severe that the TMB is receiving a supplemental appropriation to begin to address the backlog.

Presently Texas is producing more Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) than it ever has in attempt to avoid any future shortages. CRNAs have been administering anesthetics for over 100 years and have an excellent record of safety. We provide the majority of combat anesthesia to our troops and have training programs within branches of the military. Nurse Anesthetists are the proven provider. Please ask your Texas State Senator or Representative why Texas needs another anesthesia provider that is less documented than CRNAs when CRNAs are increasing numbers to meet future demands?

Diverting this time and funding to produce more Nurse Anesthetists and Anesthesiologists is the logical thing to do. CRNAs are the sole providers of anesthesia in 82 rural Texas counties. Anesthesiologists deem these markets not "lucrative" enough, yet CRNAs gladly fill the void enabling patients to have surgical and obstetrical procedures locally. Anesthesiologist Assistants on the other hand must work under direct supervision of an Anesthesiologist. What good are AAs to Texas if they can not legally work in rural Texas where anesthesia providers are needed most? 43% of ALL Texas hospitals rely on independent CRNA practice to provide obstetric, surgical and trauma stabilization services.

Again Nurse Anesthetists really need the publics support on this important issue. Here is what we need. Go to http://www.txana.org/. At the bottom right corner of the page you will notice a grassroots lobbying section with a box that says VOTER VOICE. Under Select the link that says See More. Next Click the box that says take action. Then just follow the directions. After entering your name, address and Zip code a list of your Texas legislators will come up. (Your address or name will not be used for any other reason but to find your legislator and address your letter.) Check the boxes next to your Texas State Senator and Texas State Representative. Below will be a letter with a prewritten body addressing some of the issues mentioned in this letter. You may edit the prewritten body to your liking. The letter leaves space for you to write an opening and a closing which are optional. Feel free to cut and paste portions of this letter or add your own thoughts. Your letter can be sent as an email, fax or delivered letter. The main message we want to convey is that they do not support Texas SB 1314 or HB 3313. Please forward this letter to all Texas residents you know and urge them to take a few minutes to help Texas patients, Nurse Anesthetists and Nurses.

SB 1314 and HB 3313 - Do Not Support

WHY SB 1314 AND HB 3313 ARE BAD PUBLIC POLICY

THIS IS A SCOPE OF PRACTICE FIGHT!

FACTS:
With insufficient funds for critical needs in the state, why create a licensure advisory board and licensure process for fewer than 20 people in Texas?
The Texas Medical Board (TMB) already has a backlog of over 2500 applications from badly needed physicians who cannot get licensed in Texas because TMB does not have adequate staff. The problem is so severe that TMB is receiving a supplemental appropriation to begin to address the backlog.
Anesthesiologists Assistants (AAs) do not improve access to anesthesia services because AAs can only work under the supervision of a board certified Anesthesiologist.
Anesthesiologists practice in only 70 Texas counties and one-fourth are NOT board certified.
Once licensure occurs, the next move will be to start an AA school that will drain money away from the existing anesthesiology and nurse anesthetists educational programs.
This legislation increases liability of the supervising Anesthesiologist in all cases and the health care facility if it employs an AA.
This is a pocket book issue. Anesthesiologists can make twice as much supervising 4 providers than they can actually providing care to a patient.
Passage of SB 1314 and HB 3313 WILL effect YOU!

Action Required:

Call, write, e-mail or visit your State Senator
Call, write, e-mail or visit your State Representative
Ask your friends, family and co-workers to call, write, e-mail or visit their legislators, and
Visit your legislator at the Capitol in Austin or in their district office to voice your displeasure on SB 1314 and HB 3313.
Texas must focus on accessible, affordable, high quality health care by Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
